Freelancing is all about fun -- Choose the work you love doing

I write on my blog rarely, but this might be one of those I am interested to write. It can be helpful for people who want to start their career as freelancer in any field. I am very thankful to one of my facebook friend Silviu Popovici who gave me few tips initially. So I will also be sharing a little about what this freelancing is all about and how to get started as a beginner.

What is all this Freelancing Stuff ?

A freelancer is a self-employed person working in a profession or trade and they can be hired for a given task by employers when they need to get some work done. The word's etymology derives from the term "free lance," which literally describe a knight who was not attached to any particular lord, and could be hired for a given task.

How to Get started ?

There is nothing much effort to get started. It has all fields of work. If you are a designer, writer, developer, programmer, artist or whatever.

You can just make your profile on www.freelancer.com, may be you already know about it. Put your every information in profile, make a good and complete portfolio with 4-5 items or projects that you have done.

Make sure you also verify your payment method (will take small fees of 5$), so its not difficult for you later to receive payments of projects you complete on this website. When your profile is complete, its time to start approaching for work. There are two types of work you can opt for --

1. Direct projects
2. Contests

Employers who want something to be done, can post a work either as a project or a contest.
In a contest, many freelancers do and show their work by entering into the contest. Employer can select anyone as winner (whose work he finds best) and award the money to that freelancer.

In direct projects, employer post some work with details and a specific range of budget. Freelancers enter their bids with the time and amount they want to do this work. Then employer assign that job to the most suitable person.

What I recommend

If you are good in graphics / web designing / development / programming, first go for the contests. You will be the winner if your work is suitable to the client. I started with contests 5-6 month ago and firstly I was winner in 7 out of 9 contests I entered. Then once my rating got improved, it was easier to get direct projects on the website. Currently I have over 132 projects completed on my profile --> here.

And once when your profile rating increases by time, you can bid on direct projects, then people will consider you. I have got few of very good clients from US, Australia, Hong Kong, UK as well.

Small piece of Advice

Even I am also not an expert, but one small advice I can give -- If you want to have good freelancer profile, quick money for your work and have fun, just stick with it with proper mindset. I saw many people doing it for first 2 months and then quitting it because of no work they got. Its all about how you approach for it, and the rest will come into place.

GOOD LUCK PEOPLE !
